As part of her short visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the Vietnamese Government, in the afternoon of May 18th, 2023, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), will visit the Foreign Trade University and engage in an interaction and discussion with the university’s lecturers and students. Welcoming her and attending the event, from the side of the Foreign Trade University, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Anh Tuan, President of the University; Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thi Thu Thuy, Chairwoman of the University Council; Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Thi Thu Huong, Vice Dean of the School of Economics and International Business and WTO Chairholder at the Foreign Trade University.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the first woman and the first African to hold the position of Director-General of the WTO. This event provides an opportunity for the WTO Director-General, along with Associate Professor Trinh Thi Thu Huong and WTO Chairholder at the Foreign Trade University, to exchange views with the university’s lecturers and students on current issues in international trade, emphasizing the context of globalization and the role of global supply chains. The expected topics of discussion include (i) impacts of re-globalization context on global supply chains and (ii) how WTO can support promoting the resilience of Vietnamese supply chains in fishery, textile, and agriculture sectors; (iii) regulations in new generation FTAs and their impacts on countries, especially developing countries.
The interaction and discussion session at Foreign Trade University with the WTO Director-General reaffirms the University’s leading position in research, education, and policy consultation in the fields of trade policy and international economic integration. With a history of over 60 years, the Foreign Trade University is the first educational institution in Vietnam to provide training in international business economics and international economic integration. In late 2021, the university became involved in WTO activities as one of the 17 academic institutions worldwide and the first and the only educational institution in Vietnam selected to participate in the network of the WTO Chairs Programme Phase 3.
